3 Reasons Why Having a Workout Buddy is Important

Who doesn't like having a workout buddy? I mean, working out by yourself can be lonely and kind of boring. Aside from keeping you company, there are many reasons why a workout buddy is awesome. Don't have one? I'm going to tell you three reasons why having a workout buddy is important. You'll never workout alone after this.

Reason One: Motivation, Motivation, Motivation

Perhaps the most obvious reason, a workout buddy provides, yup you guessed it, motivation! Remember that time you were about to go to the gym then decided to stay home and eat chips instead? Yeah, if you had a workout buddy that never would have happened. Maybe your having a bad day, or maybe you just can't push through that last rep. Either way, a workout buddy is there for motivation and support when you feel like giving up.

Reason Two: Competition

A little friendly competition never hurt anyone. When you workout alongside a buddy he or she will often propose small challenges. "I bet I can run 5 km faster then you," or "Lets see who can bench press more." These little challenges are great because they force you to work harder. You might even end up running faster or lifting more than you would have if you were at the gym alone. It sure feels great when you lift that personal best a few weeks earlier!

Reason Three: Feed Off of Each Other's Success

Having a workout buddy is a lot like being on a team. You encourage each other, you fail together and you succeed together. The energy and enthusiasm you show to one another makes achieving a fitness goal easier and more exciting. Feeding off each other's success makes you feel great and if you feel great, you'll keep working harder.

Remember: Pick Your Workout Buddy Wisely

So far I have talked about all the positives of having a workout buddy. The reality is not every workout buddy is a good workout buddy. If you workout with someone who socializes too much, the intensity of your workouts will suffer. Thinking of making that cute girl you always talk to at the gym your workout buddy? Forget it. You'll spend more time flirting and less time reaching goals. Take her dinner to instead and talk all you want. She'll like that more anyway. Your workout buddy should be a friend who is willing to actually work out so choose wisely.
